HP Mini 2140 Netbook Review

I am lucky enough, to have been one of the first ones to purchase the HP Mini 2140s netbooks. Mine was shipped to me in February of 2009. Being the laptop fanatic that I am, this was the first netbook I have ever owned, but the fifth laptop I have had in the last six years.

I personally absolutely love the portability of the HP Mini 2140. It may seem a little small at first, but I quickly got used to it. The 10” is bright and the metal exterior seems to make this netbook standout from the rest. While on my trip to Europe, I found that this was really the best choice for me simply because of its size.

One of the best things about this netbook is that it is extremely good for internet users. My biggest thing I do on my netbook is connect to the internet and surf the web. As soon as I pulled it out of the books, turned it on, it fired right up to the internet through Wi-Fi. I have never had any problems with it connecting at any coffee shops or networks at the hotels I have been to.

Another great feature to this laptop is that the 6-cell battery it comes with recharges extremely quickly. It takes me just a matter of minutes to get it back up to 90% from about 10%. I don’t typically let it run out of juice, nor do I charge it to 100%. Even during long flights, it seems to last a long while.

With the size of the screen, I have left my resolution at 1024 x 576. Even at that resolution, it can be a little difficult to read at times depending on the website you are at. However, the largest resolution is 1366 x 768 and I have tried it out. Unfortunately, it makes me squint and hurts my eyes after a while. So while it is pretty in appearance, it is probably not as functional as the 1024 x 576 resolution for the majority of the people. And no, I do not have terrible eyes.

The feel of the keyboard is extremely nice. The keyboard is somewhat small, but I have large hands and still able to type on the keyboard without much difficulty at all. I type faster than average and still able to do most of the typing without much error. This means that for either a female or a male with medium sized hands would probably find this keyboard to be perfectly fine without any problems at all. The keys themselves seem to have a feel to them that is extremely nice. They feel “soft” is the only way I can describe it. The keys themselves are probably more comfortable than a standard desktop keyboard. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this netbook!

Netbooks are the latest craze

Recently, for the first time in computing history, laptop and notebook unit sales were larger as a percentage than desktops. This signals a true milestone on the path to the future of the field. As the speed and number crunching capabilities of consumer technology has increased, so has the functionality it can offer us. What has just as steadily decreased is the physical size of these same electronic components. This recent usurpation of sales has taken place because we have finally arrived at a nexus point in which form factor and speed are combining in just the right ratios, for the first time, giving the average person the performance and usability they want out of something portable.

It’s not hard to imagine that the portable to desktop market share ratio will continue in this direction as power and size complimentary continue along their respective curves. Looking at history, our current selection of computers seems almost unbelievably advanced. A netbook costing $300 dollars today easily outperforms the thousand plus dollar desktops of barely ten years ago.

The massive sales of the new “netbook” class of mobile computing devices seem to obviously reinforce this “sweet spot” assumption quite clearly. While laptops have been increasingly popular for years and are immeasurably more mobile than desktops, for most of their existence up to this point they have still been too large, heavy, and clunky (as well as slow) to be used casually as well as daily by the average individual. With today’s advanced components, no sacrifice has to be made in any of these areas. Put simply, we have reached a point where computers are so useful and so mobile that they are finally ready for anyone in any situation. Perhaps in the near future, our computers will be as ubiquitous as legal pads!

One of the most interesting dynamics of the netbook market is the way in which it has opened up a window of opportunity, at least to some degree, for the Linux open source operating system. The fact that by their very nature are comparatively on the lower end of hardware performance is part of what helps Linux get their foot in the door. Some manufacturers even have an option to completely forgo Microsoft’s products all together, instead allowing users to opt for Ubuntu, the most well rounded and currently popular version of Linux available.

As time has progressed, so have the versions of Windows; the most widely used operating system in the world. Hardware performance steadily increases, and right along with them, the required resources to run each subsequent version of Windows essentially double. Linux on the other hand has always been light and fast in comparison. It is also very highly configurable and can be scaled up or down to run on the slowest to the fastest machines out there. This makes it ideal for taking advantage of the low power and energy use typical of today’s netbooks. Additionally, since they are generally more affordable than standard size laptops it is likely that those who wish to save money will be more apt to take this route when purchasing a mobile computer. Since Linux is free, it is well suited to this audience. While versions of Windows are available for every netbook available today, performance will always be increased by using the open source alternative.

Acer Aspire One Netbook Review

The Acer new launch netbook, Acer Aspire One, as what they pronounced to be not an ordinary laptop but instead a new generation of “internet device”. However it does not convinced other IT companies including Intel and their netbook rival Asus, they still considered their laptop as a “netbook”. The whole concept of netbook is first introduced by Asus with their series of Asus Eee models.

Despite the late arrival of Acer Aspire One, it has the potential to be the netbook market leader. So, what make them so unique? Below I will summarize a list of features on the Acer Aspire One netbook:

Acer Aspire One Catchy Design

Aspire One has a curved edges with glossy blue finishes. The overall dimensions are 249 x 140 x 29mm thick, which make it thinner and wider by 25mm than the Asus Eee PC 901. The overall weight of Aspire One is also lighter than the Eee PC 901. One of the main reasons is primarily due to the use of lightweight 2200mAh battery. The design of Acer Aspire One gives a more mature look to the Asus Eee PC series. For some experts, the looks of aspire One is still considered not as good as the Eee series.

Operating System

Acer Aspire One comes with two types of operating system software installation for their users to choose from, there are based on Windows or Linux systems.

2: Is the keyboard big enough?

The keyboard is the main interface with your netbook and many early-model mini-notebooks had mini keyboards. People who could easily touch-type on a regular keyboard found themselves struggling on a netbook. As well, some designers try to save space by moving keys around or reducing their size. Test the keyboard before buying so you know you’ll be able to type comfortably.

3: Is the track-pad adequate?

In the struggle to make netbooks ultra-portable the track-pad and its buttons frequently get the chop, too. Unless you’re prepared to carry a mouse, the trackpad is the other main interface with your computer. Check that the netbook’s trackpad is large enough to be usable and that the buttons are well positioned.

4: Is the display large enough?

Currently, 8.9 inch screens seem to be about the smallest display for reasonable readability, while the industry standard, the 10 inch display, is a reasonable compromise in terms of size and ease of viewing. 5: Does it have the features you require?

The majority of netbooks have the features we require in a notebook computer: a good-sized hard drive, webcam, speakers and microphone, card reader, bluetooth and a wireless card. The only feature that netbooks lack is an optical drive – the DVD/CD drive has been sacrificed to keep size and weight to a minimum. When choosing your netbook, be sure it has all the features you need.

So there are five important things to consider when purchasing your netbook.

Although these mini-notebooks are cheaper than regular notebooks, do your due diligence before buying. The main manufacturers all have web sites with detailed specifications. Have a look at them at your local computer store and check out online netbook forums. If you buy online, don’t buy on impulse and buy from a seller with a good reputation.

The difference between Laptops, Notebooks and Netbooks: 101

You hear the word netbook quite often recently and may start to wonder what that is. Does that have something to do with notebooks? But I thought those were laptops? There are different origins to each word and many “experts” will tell you the exact time, place and company of each origin. For example, netbook is currently being trademarked (if not already) by a UK firm. But in short, they are marketing terms created to sell new lines of products.

So are you telling me laptops are notebooks, which in turn are the new netbooks? Far from it. Although they may be marketing terms, they do in reality serve as categories within the portable personal computer category that denote a specific purpose to consumers. These three marketing terms tell the consumer where they should be looking based on their specific needs. For example, a teenager who does schoolwork, play games and surfs the web will probably want a laptop for his needs. Another teenager who does schoolwork, blogs and carries it to school will probably want a small notebook. A mother of these two teenagers who emails and surfs the web would probably be happy with a netbook.

Broadly summarized, laptops can be considered as portable desktops and notebooks as lightweight laptops, although both words have become synonymous and interchangeable. The new entrant of the three called netbooks can be considered as inexpensive notebooks mainly for internet use.

So when you’re deciding on what to get next, consider what you will be mainly using it for. If surfing the web is all you do, a notebook may be going overboard.
